How did two newlyweds go from big city life, a spacious apartment, and office jobs to digital nomads living and working out of a 30ft RV?

It all started in the summer of 2011 at Princeton University, when we barely knew each other but were part of a small group staying in the same eating club. Surprisingly, Dan was the only one who took up Yi’s offer to marathon the original X-men trilogy – to Yi’s moderate disappointment. But we soon found that our connection went well beyond an appreciation for groundbreaking and quality superhero movies.

In the summer of 2012, Yi became an American citizen and had the crazy idea of visiting Mount Rushmore on an all-American road trip to celebrate the occasion, as well as our first anniversary. Road trips are the true test of a relationship. If we could spend 12 straight hours in a car with only each other (and enjoy it!), this might just work. The trip sparked our love of the road and of each other, and since then we have journeyed tens of thousands of miles together across the United States and abroad.

In September 2017, we followed through on another crazy idea – celebrating our wedding at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. It was surreal to gather with our friends and family in a place so meaningful to us and yet so far from home. Many guests generously contributed to our RV fund in lieu of traditional gifts, and after our honeymoon, we set yet another ambitious goal: embark on a full-time RV journey within our first year of marriage.

After plenty of research, we bought our Winnebago Brave (Samwise), tow car (Sparky), and all sorts of other equipment for the digital nomad life, and decided to kick off our journey with a cross-country road trip to attend our friends’ wedding near Seattle. So in August 2018, we said goodbye to our New Jersey and New York City offices and our Jersey City apartment, downsized our belongings, and moved into Samwise. What has followed has been the adventure of a lifetime. Come along for the ride!
